FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT FROM MY FIRST CRANIOSACRAL SESSION?

A typical CranioSacral Therapy session takes place in a quiet, private setting.  You remain fully clothed as you relax on a comfortable massage table.

Your therapist will begin by reviewing your medical history and areas of concern.  Your therapist will begin by gently touching various parts of your body to monitor the rhythm of the fluid that is flowing around your central nervous system.   By locating areas of weaker fluid flow or tissue motion your therapist can begin to trace the original source of dysfunction.  Delicate manual techniques are used to release problem areas and improve form and function of the central nervous system.

A session can last 30-90 minutes.  It can be used alone or integrated with other wellness practices.

What you experience from your session is highly individual.  Sessions are generally deeply relaxing, creating feelings of warmth or gentile pulsing in the areas the therapist is working on.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT FROM MY FIRST VISCERAL MANIPULATION SESSION?

A typical Visceral Manipulation session takes place in a quiet, private setting.  Be sure to wear loose comfortable clothing.   Elastic waist pants or shorts allow the praciticaner easy access to the abdomen.  You may be asked to remove your shirt for certain techniques so women should wear a sports bra or comfortable undergarment.
You will complete an intake of your medical history and areas of concern.  Your therapist will begin by gently examining you for tension patterns by palpating at the head and then torso.   By locating areas tension patterns your therapist can begin to trace the original source of dysfunction.  Delicate manual techniques are used to compress, mobilize, and elongate soft tissues.

ARE THERE ANY CONTRAINDICATIONS FOR RECEIVING TREATMENT?

It is important to discuss your medical history as accurately as possible with your practitioner so the necessary adjustments can be made.

CranioSacral Therapy is contraindicated for any condition where a variation and/or slight increase in intercranial pressure would cause instability.  This may include Acute aneurysm, cerebral hemorrhage or other pre-existing severe bleeding disorders, or an acute skull fracture.

Visceral Manipulation may be contraindicated with tumors, a bleed in a part of the body, a perforated ulcer, enlarged lymph nodes, unexplained weight loss, aneurysm, intrauterine device, or active infection.

DO YOU WORK WITH CHILDREN?

Yes!  I have almost 30 years experience working with children with special needs.  CranioSacral therapy, Visceral Manipulation and Reiki can be used on all ages from newborn to elderly.   There will be some modifications required for certain techniques based on age and diagnosis so it is important that you find a practitioner that has the appropriate training and comfort level with pediatric clients.

WHAT IS SOMATOEMOTIONAL RELEASE ® ?

SomatoEmotional Release ® (SER) is a therapeutic process that helps to rid the mind and body of the residual effects of past trauma and negative emotional experiences.   The body often retains, rather than dissipates physical forces, and often the accompanying emotional energy.  As the body heals, it can wall off, this energy into what is called an energy cyst.  Although a body can initially adapt to the presence of this energy cyst, eventually it may weaken from the accommodation and can develop symptoms of pain, dysfunction, or emotional stress in response.    An SER occurs when the person receiving Craniosacral treatment is ready to release emotions that have been stored in the body over time.  When emotions are trapped in the body they may create barriers and may inhibit structural function.   The therapist will assist the client in becoming more mindful of their body, mind, and spirit and guide them towards accessing self healing resources to release these emotions.
